Jun 25, 2003

PHILADELPHIA --- Congressman Robert A. Brady (D., Pa.) has been appointed by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to serve on the Leader's African American Workgroup (LAAW).

The objectives of the LAAW include: the creation of an African American Action Plan for Democratic members that would establish an African American action agenda on education, healthcare, economic development and housing issues; and, increasing the dialogue among members of Congress on issues of diversity and race.

"We are delighted with Bob's leadership and expertise on the LAAW. He will serve a key role in helping Democrats strengthen the relationship between all of our Members and the African American community," said Leader Pelosi.

Pelosi said Democrats are committed to the task of developing effective messages, initiatives and strategies for communicating the Democratic agenda to African Americans in rural, urban and suburban communities throughout the country.

Congressman Brady said the formation of the LAAW is an important step to deal with the critical issues facing African Americans constituents in the First Congressional District and throughout the nation. "Democrats must continue to support a legislative agenda that supports African American concerns and can be embraced by African American voters."

The LAAW is chaired by Congressman Jim Clyburn who is also vice chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. It was specifically organized for Democratic legislators who represent districts with an African American constituency of 10% or more.
